Showrunners Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts hint that major characters on the series seemingly won't stay safe throughout the series.

AceShowbiz - Showrunners of "Star Trek: Discovery" hint that the upcoming series will go towards a different direction from the older series in the iconic sci-fi franchise. Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts open up to EW that major characters on the series won't stay safe throughout the series.

The showrunners credits HBO's "Game of Thrones" for the intriguing revelation. " 'Game of Thrones' changed television," Berg says. "They almost made it difficult to fall in love with people because you didn't know if they were going to be taken away from you. That show's had an influence on all TV dramas that have come after it."

However, Harberts asserts that should a main character be killed off, it would turn into a blood bath like the infamous Red Wedding on the HBO show. "Death isn't treated gratuitously on this show. It's not for shock value. But when it happens we want to make sure that people really feel it."

Across the franchise, there are several instances where some of the characters died. Some were due to non-creative backstage reasons or when the series was approaching its series finale. Tasha Yar (The Next Generation), Dax (Deep Space Nine), Kes (Voyager) and Trip Tucker (Enterprises) were all dead on their respective shows. All characters, except for Tucker, died due to behind-the-scenes issues.

The hints seemingly indicates that "Discovery" will be the first "Star Trek" first series which makes the possibility of the deaths of its main characters stay open. And the deaths are most likely needed for story reasons, rather than behind-the-scenes issues.

"Star Trek: Discovery" will take place prior to the original "Star Trek" television series. Starring Sonequa Martin-Green, Michelle Yeoh, Doug Jones, Rainn Wilson, James Frain and Jason Isaacs, the series is set to debut through a special broadcast premiere on Sunday, September 24 at 8.30 P.M. on CBS, before moving to its home on CBS All Access.
