The 'Transformers' spin-off, therefore, will be a prequel to the 'Transformers' movie series and 'likely pitching a little younger [audience], tonally.'

AceShowbiz - Some new details about "Transformers" spin-off "Bumblebee" have emerged. A feature in Empire Magazine confirms that the Bumblebee standalone movie will take place in 1980s, which means that "Bumblebee" will be a prequel to the "Transformers" movie series.

The magazine also reveals that Bumblebee "will feature considerably fewer Transformers, concentrating on the big, yellow star (who in the movies so far can only talk via snippets of radio broadcasts) and likely pitching a little younger [audience], tonally."

"Bumblebee" will be directed by "Kubo and the Two Strings" director Travis Knight. "Pitch Perfect" actress Hailee Steinfeld has been tapped to star in the "Transformers" spin-off. The spin-off is penned by Christina Hodson, with Lorenzo Di Bonaventure, Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg producing.

In the "Transformers" movie series, Bumblebee is an autobot with yellow and black paint scheme. Determined and brave, he is one of Optimus Prime's most trusted lieutenants.

The yellow autobot will return to the fifth installment of the "Transformers" movie series, titled "Transformers: The Last Knight". The movie shatters the core myths of the "Transformers" franchise and redefines what it means to be a hero. Humans and Transformers are at war, Optimus Prime is gone. The key to saving our future lies buried in the secrets of the past, in the hidden history of Transformers on Earth. Saving our world falls upon the shoulders of an unlikely alliance: Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg); Bumblebee; an English Lord (Anthony Hopkins); and an Oxford Professor (Laura Haddock).

"Transformers: The Last Knight" is set to hit U.S theaters on June 23.
