Selena, who executive produces the Netflix series, reveals matching black semicolon tattoos with the show's cast, Tommy Dorfman and Alisha Boe.

AceShowbiz - Selena Gomez got a matching tattoo with "13 Reasons Why" stars, Tommy Dorfman and Alisha Boe. She shared the photo of their matching semicolon tattoos via Instagram Stories on April 9.

So why they got semicolon etched on their wrists? The black semicolon tattoo represents mental health awareness and suicide prevention. Semicolon tattoos mean "a sentence the author could've ended, but chose not to. That author is you and the sentence is your life." These issues are the themes of the series, which is based on a novel written by Jay Asher which was published in 2007.

It tells a story about Hannah Baker, a high school student who is deeply depressed and lonely before deciding to commit suicide. She records 13 tapes before her death, revealing 13 reasons why she decides to kill herself then sends those tapes to 13 of her friends who are related to the reasons. The novel addresses issues like rape, violence, suicide and drug abuse.

Selena executive produced the show after Universal Studios bought film rights to the novel in 2011. She personally loved the the novel because she was able to relate with the main character. "I see myself in Hannah so much. Seven years ago I did and even more so today, which I think is funny because it's backwards," she told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview.

The "Good for You" singer was supposed to play Hannah, but she changed her mind. "A book is frightening for me because I know the cult following it has, which is the reason why I didn't want to be in it," Selena shared.

"13 Reasons Why" premiered on Netflix on March 31 and garnered excellent reviews. It is said to be in talks for season two since the ending of season one leaves many cliffhangers. The viewers and the cast have expressed their wish in continuing the series as well.

However, Selena hasn't given a clear answer. She said, "We don't know what is going to go beyond it, but we know there are so many stories that lie beneath each character. That's why it became a series in the first place. So we'll see."
