The 'True Detective' alum will play Oliver North, a National Security Council staff member during 1980 Iran-Contra scandal.

AceShowbiz - Colin Farrell is heading back to small screen following the sophomore season of "True Detective". The actor is set to star as controversial political figure Oliver North in an untitled limited series based on Iran-Contra scandal, Variety reports. The Amazon limited series will see the reunion between the actor and "The Lobster" helmer Yorgos Lanthimos.

"I'm really excited to be working with Colin again on something quite different to what we have done so far," Lanthimos said. He added, "I look forward to joining forces with Ben [Stiller] and Nicky [Weinstock], who had an excellent casting idea and saw the potential of the material early on and Amazon, who has embraced the project with great enthusiasm. It makes me very confident and excited to be working on a script which, although based on relatively recent history, feels very fresh and relevant to our times."

North, who hosted FOX News Channel's show "War Stories With Oliver North", was a National Security Council staff during the Iran-Countra affair in 1980. North was said to be partly responsible for the affair, during which weapons were sold illegally to Iran to help encourage the release of U.S. hostages in Lebanon. The Marine Corps veteran allegedly made part of the plan to divert proceeds from weapons sales to support Contra rebel groups in Nicaragua, which was prohibited.

The project sets Enzo Mileti and Scott Wilson as scriptwriters. Ben Stiller and Nick Weinstock will serve as executive producers for Red Hour Films.

Farrell and Lanthimos previously worked together on satire "The Lobster" which earned the director an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay. They recently wrapped up the filming of their upcoming A24 movie "The Killing of a Sacred Deer". Lanthimos' other TV project is a new AMC series starring "Fargo" actress Kirsten Dunst.
