New Line Is Developing Horror Film Set in 'The Wizard of Oz' Universe

The universe is based on L. Frank Baum's classic novel 'The Wizard of Oz', which has been adapted into movies, TV and stages numerous times.

AceShowbiz - New Line Cinema has bought a pitch written by Mike Van Waes for developing a horror movie set in the world of "The Wizard of Oz", The Hollywood Reporter reports. The universe is based on L. Frank Baum's classic novel "The Wizard of Oz" which was published in 1900.

"The Wizard of Oz" follows the story of Dorothy, a young girl who is swept away into a magical world along with her dog. Dorothy and her dog meet Lion, the Tinman and the Scarecrow in the magical world, where she eventually is obliged to fight against the Wicked Witch of the West.

Baum's novel has been adapted numerous times into movies, TV and stages. 1939's film, starring Judy Garland, became one of the most remarkable "The Wizard of Oz" movie adaptations. Another adaptation titled "Oz the Great and Powerful" was released in 2013, with James Franco, Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz starring. "The Wizard of Oz" characters also appeared on ABC series "Once Upon a Time". As for stage stories, the novel was adapted into 1975's "The Wiz" and 2003's "Wicked".

Van Waes, the screenwriter of the upcoming horror film set in "The Wizard of Oz" universe, has sold several pitches namely "Hammerspace" and "Peeves". "Hammerspace" was bought by Warner Bros. and "Peeves" was bought by Fox for an upcoming animation project.

New Line, meanwhile, has released a series of successful horror movies, which include "The Conjuring 2" and "Lights Out". The studio is set to release "Annabelle" sequel "Annabelle 2" and a movie adaptation based on Stephen King's "It".
