'Split' Defeats 'Rings' on Box Office, 'The Space Between Us' Flops
Movie

'Split' has stayed at No. 1 for three weeks, while 'Rings' only earns $13 million domestically against its $25 million budget.

AceShowbiz - "Split" is still unshaken on North American box office, securing the top spot for three weeks in a row. The movie centering on a man with two dozen personalities earned $14.4 million over the weekend.

"Split" is therefore proven to be profitable. With a modest $9 million budget, M. Night Shyamalan's thriller has gained $98.5 million domestically so far, plus $44 million internationally.

With most of Americans paying attention to the battle between New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons at Super Bowl LI, multiplexes became somewhat quiet. Possibly affected by this, "Rings", the last installment of "The Ring" movie franchise, didn't have a very good start.

While "The Ring" gained $15 million on its way to a $129.1 million domestic gross in 2002 and "The Ring 2" kicked off to $35.1 million in 2005, "Rings" only opened with $13 million. Considering that "Rings" was made with $25 million budget, the income was somewhat disappointing. In terms of international gross, "Rings" earned $15.2 million from 35 international markets.

Just like its predecessors, "Rings" still focuses on a videotape which kills those who watch it. With its modest income, "Rings" became another movie franchise which couldn't really rekindle public's interest, after "Barbershop: The Next Cut", "Blair Witch", *"XXX: Return of Xander Cage", "Bad Santa 2" and "Independence Day: Resurgence".

"A Dog's Purpose" dropped to the third place over the weekend. Despite the leaked controversial video which featured alleged animal abuse on the filming set, the dog-themed movie still attracted moviegoers as well as animal lovers. The movie gained $10.5 million domestically.

"Hidden Figures", an uplifting drama about three female African-American mathematicians, dropped to the fourth place. The movie gained $10.2 million over the weekend. "La La Land" solidly sits on the fifth place, earning $7.4 million. With its $268.3 worldwide income, "La La Land" became the eighth highest-grossing movie musical of all time.

Meanwhile, sci-fi romance "The Space Between Us" bombed and sat on the ninth place on the weekend box office. The movie was expected to gross $8 million to $10 million in its debut weekend, but it only gained $3.8 million. "The Space Between Us" focuses on a relationship between a young man who lives on Mars and a girl from Earth. Its studio STX Entertainment was just launched in 2014 and relatively new in Hollywood.

Finally, "XXX: Return of Xander Cage" is rounding out the top ten box office by earning $3.9 million over the weekend.
