Toby Jones' Culverton Smith will force Sherlock to reveal his dark secrets and perhaps to say the 'L' word.

AceShowbiz - PBS and Masterpiece have finally released the first trailer for "Sherlock" season 4, just a few weeks shy before its premiere. Just like the previously released teaser, the new promo video stresses that "it's not a game anymore" as the titular detective is facing off against "the darkest villain" the show has ever had, Culverton Smith, portrayed by Toby Jones.

"The roads we walk have demons beneath. And yours have been waiting for a very long time," someone says in voiceover, as a shot of a burning house is featured on screen. "You know why I'm here," Sherlock says.

"I thought it was some kind of trick," Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman) says, but Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) tells him, "It was not a trick, it was a plan." Culverton will push Sherlock to the edge and force the detective to tell his darkest secrets. At the end of the trailer, Sherlock says, "I love you" to someone unseen.

The fourth season of the Emmy-winning drama will once again be comprised of three episodes which promise "laughter, tears, shocks, surprises and extraordinary cases." It will see John and Mary preparing "for their biggest ever challenge - becoming parents for the first time."

The first episode titled "The Six Thatchers" will air January 1, 2017 on PBS Masterpiece, the same date it airs across the pond. The season finale, "The Final Problem", will be screened in 350 cinemas nationwide on January 16 and 18.

There has been speculation that the fourth season could be the last after Cumberbatch said in an interview with GQ, "It feels like the end of an era, to be honest." He, however, later clarified it, claiming that he was misquoted.

"It was a complete distortion of what I actually said which was '[season 4] was the last one for now.' There's a big difference, and he just went 'It's the last one' and left a paragraph hanging in the air," he explained. "All I'll say about it is that we're all very busy. We're all doing other things now, and you have to see the fourth season to see why it's not going to happen in the same regularity as it has been happening....When it's right - and if it's right - we'll do more."
