Angela Bassett Joins 'Black Panther' as T'Challa's Mother

The Oscar-nominated actress will play the mother of the titular superhero that will be depicted by Chadwick Boseman.

AceShowbiz - Angela Bassett has joined the burgeoning cast of "Black Panther". Marvel Studios has announced that the Oscar-nominated actress will portray T'Challa's mother named Ramonda, starring alongside Chadwick Boseman who will reprise his role as the titular superhero.

The star-studded ensemble also includes the likes of Forest Whitaker, Martin Freeman, Danai Gurira, Lupita Nyong'o and Michael B. Jordan. Additionally "Person of Interest" alum Winston Duke has been tapped to play Black Panther's enemy M'Baku a.k.a. Man-Ape.

Director Ryan Coogler is attached to sit behind the lens for the movie which is expected to begin production in Atlanta, Georgia early next year. He also co-writes the screenplay with "American Crime Story" scribe Joe Robert Cole.

"Black Panther" is set to hit U.S. theaters on February 16, 2018. It follows T'Challa, the new ruler of the advanced kingdom of Wakanda who must defend his land from being torn apart by enemies from outside and inside the country.

Bassett is one of the stars on FOX's "American Horror Story". The 58-year-old actress was most recently seen on the big screen in Gerard Butler's "London Has Fallen" and in Spike Lee's "Chi-Raq" opposite Nick Cannon, Samuel L. Jackson, Jennifer Hudson and John Cusack.
