Robert Downey Jr. Approves of Black Iron Man, the Internet Is Not So Much

The Tony Stark depicter is excited for Riri Williams to take up the Iron Man mantle while online fans slam Marvel for having a white man write the story.

AceShowbiz - Controversy arises regarding the new Iron Man. While the onscreen Iron Man %cRobert Downey Jr.% gives a stamp of approval on the hero being incarnated as a black woman in the upcoming comic book, opinion is divided across the internet.

"Get ready for a new generation of Marvel BAMF...," the actor endorses Riri Williams as Tony Stark's successor in "Invincible Iron Man" written by Brian Michael Bendis. Many fans, however, have issues with Bendis writing the new comic book.

They wish Marvel hired a black woman, instead of a white man, to write the story. "You aren't giving these characters their OWN identities. 'Black Female Iron Man' sounds like good publicity. But only good publicity," one voices their frustration.

"You can't call these diverse stories without diverse voices," another points out. One more fan says, "I'm happy for all of these Black women leads in Marvel comics, but really wish the publisher would give Black women a chance to write them."
