In a lengthy statement, the actor retracts his earlier comments that the upcoming season 8 would be the last for the show.

AceShowbiz - Ian Somerhalder is trying to clear up the misunderstanding after fueling rumors about the end of "The Vampire Diaries". The Damon Salvatore depicter has retracted his previous statements that the upcoming eighth season would be the last for the supernatural drama series.

"Last weekend I talked to an audience at a Q&A about the end of #TVD and how excited I was to make what I believe - my last year - be as great as possible," he wrote on TwitPlus on Wednesday, April 13. "Somehow in my infinite wisdom and end-of-season foggy brain, I managed to make it sound like the show was coming to an end. Cut-to the press running stories that the show would be done after Season 8."

He continued, "Thing is, the people who actually make that decision (the CW and WB) haven't made it yet! So let's take things one step at a time: Season 7 wrap, vacation, lots of sleep, let the writers get started on Season 8, and then we'll all see where we go from there. Until then, much love ;)"

Showrunner Julie Plec made a similar statement when addressing Katerina Graham's departure after season 8. "I'm going to be dead honest with you: I was so happy to get season 8 that even the idea of season 9 is so far away - I haven't even started thinking about it," Plec told TVLine. "I know Kat made her announcement; I wish her everything she wants, and she can stay as long as she wants."
