'Divergent Series: Ascendant' Budget Cut After 'Allegiant' Flops at Box Office

Lionsgate, however, still plans to release the final film in the 'Divergent' franchise on June 19, 2017, the same day 'World War Z 2' and 'The Mummy' reboot are released.

AceShowbiz - Despite the failure of "The Divergent Series: Allegiant", the fourth and final film in the franchise is still going to happen. However, a new report claims that Lionsgate will significantly reduce the budget for the next installment titled "Ascendant".

"The budget for the next one will be reduced [compared to the previous film]," a well-placed production source tells The Hollywood Reporter. The exact figures are still unknown. But the latest film's budget was at around $110 million, so its follow-up will likely be made on much smaller number than that.

"Allegiant" is the first of the series' two-part finale. It debuted last weekend with approximately $29 million in the U.S., posting the franchise's lowest opening weekend so far. Its two predecessors, 2015's "The Divergent Series: Insurgent" and 2014's "Divergent", debuted with $54 million and $52 million respectively.

"The Divergent Series: Ascendant" is scheduled to open in U.S. theaters on June 9, 2017 and Lionsgate apparently has no plan to change the release date. It means the movie will still have to compete against Paramount's "World War Z 2" and Universal's reboot of "The Mummy".

"We now know it's not a box office behemoth," Jeff Bock, analyst at Exhibitor Relations, told Variety of the fourth "Divergent" film. "It's not a summer release. The momentum is gone. In fact it's at a grinding halt. You've got two huge franchises opening against and this one is dwindling. Unless they want another 40|percent| drop, they have to change that date. They've got to start making good decisions, and one of those good decisions would be to move this."
