'It felt like it was time,' TNT boss Kevin Reilly says about ending the crime drama series after six seasons.

AceShowbiz - TNT is ready to say goodbye to "Rizzoli & Isles". Turner Entertainment chief creative officer Kevin Reilly announced at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, California on Thursday, January 7 that it canceled the long-running drama series.

The upcoming seventh season will now be the last for the police procedural starring Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander. The 13-episode final season will premiere this summer.

"That will be the final season," Reilly confirmed. "I think both ladies have had a really satisfying experience. I don't know that they wouldn't do anymore, but I think they felt very comfortable that it's had a good run. It felt like it was time. Everyone said, 'Let's go out and finish 13 great ones and call it a day.' "

Star Alexander told Variety about the cancellation, " 'Rizzoli & Isles' hit a cord with audiences the moment it aired, which is unusual and special. And it has remained so for almost seven seasons thanks to the passionate commitment of our amazing fans. In this world, that's a huge success. I believe we have two eyes so one can look back to the past as the other turns its gaze to the future. As 'R&I' comes to a close, I am deeply grateful and inspired by the work we have done and the friendships we have forged but also am excited to see what the future will hold."

"Rizzoli & Isles" is actually a strong performer on TNT, averaging 11.1 million viewers across all platforms in its sixth season. However, the network has been heading toward darker fare under the leadership of Reilly.
