Chadwick Boseman to Portray Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall in Biopic
Movie

The film, written by Bridgeport attorney Michael Koskoff, will follow Marshall's case of African-American chauffeur against Greenwich socialite in 1940s.

AceShowbiz - Chadwick Boseman has signed up to portray another real-life iconic character. The actor, who played singer James Brown in "Get on Up" and MLB player Jackie Robinson in "42", is joining courtroom thriller titled "Marshall" about the legendary lawyer and Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall.

"Thurgood Marshall was a man who took his life in his hands every time he came to a town to bring justice," director Reginald Hudlin said in a press release. "Marshall was a cowboy who used his law books as guns. He was the smartest guy in the room of any room he was in. But he wasn't a punk and didn't hesitate to throw a punch if the occasion called for it."

Bridgeport attorney Michael Koskoff had been working on the script for years when he brought in his son Jacob. The younger Koskoff is also a screenwriter whose credit includes an adaptation of Shakespeare's "Macbeth". Koskoff Sr. said, "It particularly appealed to me because of my background. I handled a lot of civil rights cases in Connecticut in the 60s."

The film will take a slice out of Marshall's life way before he became the Supreme Court when he was holding a case in Bridgeport. In 1940, a Greenwich socialite, Eleanor Strubing, accused her African-American chauffeur Joseph Spell of rape and kidnapping. NAACP pointed Samuel Friedman to defend Spell and hired Marshall to assist Friedman. "It's the story of two young lawyers, one black, one a Jew, in a time of a huge amount of antisemitism and racism," Koskoff said.

Production will begin this week in Los Angeles and take a break in spring to accommodate Hudlin's gig as the producer of the Academy Awards. No release date is announced yet.
