AceShowbiz - When announcing the re-issue of his "In the Lonely Hour" last month, Sam Smith revealed that there would be his cover of Amy Winehouse's "Love Is a Losing Game" on the project. The British singer then debuted his take on the late singer's masterpiece on Thursday, November 5 through Annie Mac's BBC Radio 1 program.
Smith's version is a lot slower and depressing than the original. Backed only by piano, the 23-year-old entertainer croons, "Love is a losing game/ One I wish I never played/ Oh what a mess we made/ And now the final frame/ Love is a losing game."
Smith is openly a huge fan of Winehouse. Talking about his cover on the radio show, he explained how she inspired him. "Sometimes people forget my age. I was 11 years old when [Winehouse's debut album] 'Frank' came out," he told the show's host.
"And that album has really shaped me as an artist and my views on music and my relationship with music lyrically," he continued. "Her rawness on such beautiful chords, on such expensive chords... It's just amazing."
The "In the Lonely Hour" re-issue, titled "In the Lonely Hour: Drowning Shadows Edition", is coming out on November 6. Recently, Smith unveiled its title track "Drowning Shadows", which he said was the saddest song he'd ever written.
