Viola won the Emmy Award for her role as Annalise Keating on "How to Get Away with Murder". When receiving the award on Sunday, September 20, she began her acceptance speech with a quote from Harriet Tubman. " 'In my mind, I see a line. And over that line, I see green fields and lovely flowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me. But I can't seem to get there no how.' That was Harriet Tubman in the 1800s," she said.

"And the only thing that separates us is opportunity," the Oscar-nominated actress continued, "You can't win an Emmy for roles that simply aren't there. So here's to all the awesome writers, people who have redefined what it to be beautiful, to be black. To the Taraji P. Henson, Kerry Washington, Halle Berry, Gabrielle Union, thank you for getting us over that line."
