AceShowbiz - Zac Efron's electronic dance music film "We Are Your Friends" launched to a disappointing $1.8 million from 2,333 theaters, making it the worst debut of all time for a major studio movie opening in 2,000 or more theaters. The Warner Bros. film was predicted to earn at least $8 million in its first week in theaters, but it turned out that the movie did far less than expected.
"This was a passion project for Zac Efron, and we believe in him," said Warners exec VP for domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein. "Yes, the result was disappointing, but this was a small film," Goldstein added. The movie even failed to enter the top ten in this weekend's box office and earned middling reviews and a C+ CinemaScore from audiences.
Meanwhile, rap group movie "Straight Outta Compton" managed to maintain its glory, placing number one for the third straight weekend with $13.1 million for a domestic total of $134.1 million.
Christian drama "War Room" performed well, earning $11.4 million from 1,135 theaters in its opening weekend. The movie has a good debut which marked the top debut for a faith-based title since "Heaven Is for Real" ($22.5 million) in April 2014.
Another new release was "No Escape", which opened to $8.1 million, coming right after Tom Cruise's-starrer "Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation", which grossed $8.2 million in its fifth week. Rounding out the top five was "Sinister 2", adding another $4.7 million for a domestic total of $18.5 million.
