James Wan May Produce 'Mortal Kombat' Movie

The 'Furious 7' director is reportedly in early talks to produce the movie which is based on Midway's popular video games.

AceShowbiz - The long-in-development "Mortal Kombat" movie seems to be moving forward. According to The Tracking Board, "Furious 7" and "Aquaman" helmer James Wan is in talks to produce the movie which is currently underway at New Line and Broken Road.

The script is written by "Mortal Kombat: Legacy" writer Oren Uziel and "The Expendables" writer Dave Callaham. The story centers on a fighter who is caught in the middle of a cross-dimensional battle between the warriors of Earth and the monsters of Outworld. In order to stop the world from total destruction, he must win the martial arts tournament known as "Mortal Kombat".

The film is based on Midway's popular 1992 video game of the same name. Choreographer-turned-director Kevin Tancharoen was initially set to helm "Mortal Kombat" movie, but he later announced himself that he would not helm the upcoming project.

Besides the web series "Legacy", there are two "Mortal Kombat" movies which have already been released. The first one was released in 1995 and was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. It was followed two years later with a sequel entitled "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation".
