The rappers were announced as the winners in Best Male Hip-Hop and Best Female Hip-Hop categories respectively.

AceShowbiz - The 2015 BET Awards was officially kicked off at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on June 28. Kendrick Lamar opened the event with a powerful live performance of "Alright", the latest single off his "To Pimp a Butterfly" album. He performed the song on top of a battered cop car with an American flag as the backdrop.

The Compton native also became one of the first winners as he was named Best Male Hip-Hop Artist. Edging out competitors like J. Cole, Drake, Common, Big Sean and Wale, he's presented with the award by the cast of BET's "The Game".

Nicki Minaj joined Lamar in the winners list as she won the Best Female Hip-Hop Artist title over fellow nominees including Azealia Banks, Dej Loaf, Iggy Azalea, Tink and Trina. Accepting her trophy from Sanaa Lathan, Morris Chestnut and Michael Ealy, the "Anaconda" raptress gave a shout out to tourmate Dej Loaf in her speech.

The 2015 BET Awards is airing live with Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross as co-hosts. More winners will be announced later in the night.
