Scott Speer will helm the project which is based on a 2006 Japanese movie about a young woman who has a rare disease which forces her to stay away from the sunlight.

AceShowbiz - Patrick Schwarzenegger has been cast as the lead alongside Bella Thorne in the YA drama "Midnight Sun (2016)", Deadline reports. The movie will be directed by Scott Speer ("Step Up Revolution") with a script from Eric Kristen.

The movie is based on a 2006 Japanese movie which centers on a 17-year-old girl named Katie (Bella) who has a rare disease which forces her to stay indoor because even the smallest amount of sunlight could kill her. She then meets and falls in love with a young man named Charlie (Patrick) as they set off for a summer romance.

"Midnight Sun" will start production in September. John Rickard and Zach Schiller are producing, while David Boies, James McGough, Alan Ou, Hiroki Shirota and Speer are serving as executive producers. Devin Andre will co-produce, Boies/Schiller Film Group will finance and WME Global will handle the domestic sale.

Patrick will next be seen in "Scouts vs. Zombies" alongside Tye Sheridan, Logan Miller, Joey Morgan and Halston Sage. The horror comedy is set to hit U.S. theaters on October 30. His other film credits include "Stuck in Love" and "Grown Ups 2".

Bella, meanwhile, will next be seen in "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip" and supernatural horror flick "Amityville: The Awakening". The movies will be released in the U.S. on December 23 this year and April 15, 2016 respectively.
