Miley Cyrus, Sam Smith and Other Celebs Praise Ireland for Legalizing Gay Marriage

Celebrities take to Twitter to praise and show support to Republic of Ireland which became the first country legalizing same-sex marriage by popular vote.

AceShowbiz - Celebrities flooded Twitter after Republic of Ireland made history by legalizing same-sex marriage through referendum. They joined the crowd showing their support to the social progress in that country.

Some celebrities including Miley Cyrus, Sam Smith and Ellen DeGeneres quickly showed their support to the country. They have been known as outspoken advocates of LGBT rights. Cyrus simply tweeted, "F**k yeah Ireland!" while Smith wrote, "So happy Ireland have passed the law to get married there. Still genuinely shocks me thou, that this is only just happening!!"

DeGeneres excitedly took to Twitter, "Ireland did it! The 1st country to legalize marriage equality by popular vote, but they won't be the last! What an incredible accomplishment." Another praise was given by Neil Patrick Harris who wrote, "I proudly raise a pint glass of Guinness and toast the people of Ireland for voting by a sweeping majority to legalize same sex marriage!"

Addressing Ireland as the pioneer of gay marriage legislation by referendum, Sarah Silverman wrote, "Republic of IRELAND leads the world in social progress by legalizing marriage for all. #LoveWins (shouldn't it always?)." Ellen Page, who previously re-tweeted her fellow's tweet to support the vote for Ireland, excitedly tweeted, "IRELAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"Ted" actor Seth MacFarlane, who is passionate to support gay rights, encouraged the U.S. to follow Ireland as he tweeted, "Congratulations to Ireland for legalizing same-sex marriage on a national level! Come on U.S., let's catch up to the future." Russell Crowe also sent a Twitter post in reference to Ireland's gay marriage legislation, "Dear Ireland, you are even more amazing."

While MacFarlane urged the U.S., Ian McKellen addressed Northern Ireland on his tweet as he wrote, "CONGRATULATIONS to the Republic on saying yes to same-gender marriage! Now what about Northern Ireland?" American-born Irish actress Saoirse Ronan, with reference to the legislation, tweeted, "I LOVE YOU IRELAND!!!!! IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY!"

Furthermore, prominent writer J.K. Rowling tweeted, "Sitting here watching the Irish make history. Extraordinary and wonderful." She also replied a tweet from her follower who asked whether she was proud of Ireland by tweeting, ".@cassie10yson I don't have the right to be proud, as I'm not Irish. I'm in awe, that's what I am - Ireland has set an example to the world!"
