Cate Blanchett Admits She Had Relationships With Women

Having similarity to her character in a new movie, 'Carol', the Australian actress who has four children from her marriage with Andrew Upton reveals her past relationships with women.

AceShowbiz - Cate Blanchett made a surprising statement about her past relationship. In a recent interview with Variety magazine, she admitted that she had many past relationships with women.

During the interview, she was asked about her character who likes women in Todd Haynes' "Carol". When asked whether it was "her first turn as a lesbian," the 45-year-old actress asked, "On film - or in real life?" Blanchett was then asked about her past relationship with women in real life and she replied, "Yes. Many times."

Similar to her character who never comes out as lesbian, Blanchett didn't think it was necessary to label her past relationship. "I never thought about it. I don't think Carol thought about it," she said. "I think there are a lot of people that exist like that who don't feel the need to shout things from the rafters."

Blanchett explained that she read a lot of references to get herself well-prepared for the role. "I read a lot of girl-on-girl books from the period," she said.

The Australian actress, who recently starred as Cinderella's stepmother in "Cinderella", told the magazine that she was planning to move from Sydney to either New York or San Francisco along with her husband, Andrew Upton, and four children, to focus on her acting.

Haynes' "Carol" is based on 1952's novel "The Price of Salt" written by Patricia Highsmith. The story particularly talks about two women who fall in love to each other. The movie will premiere at Cannes Film Festival on May 17. In this movie, Blanchett co-stars with Rooney Mara who plays her love on-screen interest.
