The first official photo from Martin Scorsese's long-developed movie features Andrew Garfield and a Japanese actor.

AceShowbiz - The first official photo of Andrew Garfield in the film "Silence" has been revealed. The photo features Garfield as Father Rodrigues and Shinya Tsukamoto as a villager named Mokichi.

Directed by Martin Scorsese, the film took many years to develop before finally it completed filming in Taiwan recently. The film is based on religious novel written by Shusaku Endo about two 17th century Jesuit priests who face violence and persecution when they travel to Japan to locate their mentor and to spread the gospel of Christianity. Scorsese thought that the book resembled him very much and it led him to find a way to adapt this novel immediately.

During a press conference for the movie in Taiwan which was held on Monday, May 4, Scorsese opened up, "The subject matter presented by Shusaku Endo was in my life since I was very, very young, I was very much involved in religion, I was raised in a strong Catholic family... Further reflection is how [we] want to lead our life in the Christian faith... so ultimately this book drew my attention when it was given to me in 1988."

This is not the first time the director has been attracted to religious-theme project. He also directed "The Last Temptation of Christ", the film starring Willem Dafoe in the role of Jesus Christ in 1988.

In "Silence", Garfield stars alongside Liam Neeson, Tadanobu Asano, Adam Driver and Issei Ogata. Irwin Winkler, Randall Emmett, George Furla, Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Checchi Gori and Barbara DeFina produce the movie while the script is provided by Jay Cocks and Scorsese. The film is scheduled for a U.S. release on November 1.
