'Furious 7' Stays Atop Box Office, Holds Off 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2'

The latest 'Fast and Furious' installment becomes the seventh highest-grossing pic of all time after three triumphant weekends, while the 'Paul Blart' sequel opens at the second spot.

AceShowbiz - "Furious 7" rules box office for the third weekend in a row. The seventh installment of the "Fast and Furious" franchise adds approximately another $29.1 million for a domestic total of $294.4 million. Although it's more than 50|percent| drop from last week's $59.8M take, it's enough to block "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2" from making No. 1 debut.

The movie collects a global haul of $1.2 billion to become the seventh highest-grossing movie of all time. It joins the elite billion club faster than any other movies and becomes the first Universal film to reach the milestone in its initial theatrical release. The studio's "Jurassic Park" crossed the $1 billion mark only after getting a 3D release in 2013.

Meanwhile, "Paul Blart" sequel settles at the second place with approximately $24 million. The Kevin James-starring comedy is followed by horror pic "Unfriended" which opens with an estimated $16 million. The other new release which makes it to the top 10 this weekend is documentary "Monkey Kingdom" which enters the chart at No. 7 with approximately $4.7 million.
