Wahlberg is expected to play Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis who plays an important role in the massive manhunt to capture the culprits responsible for the 2013 bombings.

AceShowbiz - Mark Wahlberg is rumored to play the lead role in CBS Films' "Patriots' Day", a movie about the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings. The "Transformers: Age of Extinction" star is also expected to serve as a producer along with Michael Radutzky ("60 Minutes").

Based on the personal account of Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis, the movie will be scripted by Matt Chapman who penned Steven Spielberg's Cold War movie "Bridge of Spies". No director is expected to be named soon as production is scheduled to begin later this year.

According to a press release from CBS Films, "Commissioner Davis played an integral role in working with the FBI, Watertown Police Department, Boston Police Department, Massachusetts State Police and local first responders to track, identify and apprehend the suspected bombers."

"Their tactics included the use of sophisticated identity technology and giving the historic order to put the city of Boston under lockdown as they rushed to apprehend the suspects. The story is envisioned as an intense thriller, spanning the five-day search up to the infamous siege where Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was pulled from a boat in Watertown."

CBS Films' chief Terry Press said, "There is nothing more compelling than a real story populated by real heroes. The team that we have assembled for this project is determined to give audiences a very personal look at what occurred during the days when the eyes of the world were on the city of Boston and how a group of contemporary patriots faced this crisis."

A rival project "Boston Strong" is also planned to film this year. Based on a book by Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge, it's written by "The Fighter" screenwriters Eric Johnson and Paul Tamasy. Casey Affleck is attached to play the major character, while Daniel Espinosa ("Safe House") is expected to sit behind the lens.

A third Boston Marathon Bombings movie is reportedly set up at Lionsgate as well. It will be adapted from a book called "Stronger" by Jeff Bauman, who survived the tragic incident and lost both his legs in the attack. Scott Silver who co-wrote "The Fighter" with Johnson and Tamasy will allegedly be producing alongside "The Fighter" producers Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman.
