AceShowbiz - The first stills from Open Road Films' "The Snowden Files" have arrived online. They give a first look at Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the controversial National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden in the big-screen drama directed by Oliver Stone. Both photos show the "Looper" actor wearing army gear.

The film is expected to be based on the books "Time of the Octopus" by Snowden's lawyer Anatoly Kucherena and "The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World's Most Wanted Man" by The Guardian journalist Luke Harding. Shailene Woodley, Zachary Quinto, Melissa Leo, Nicolas Cage, and Rhys Ifans are among the cast. It's filming in Munich and due for U.S. release on December 25.

"The Snowden Files" is not the only movie about the NSA whistleblower. Sony is also developing a similar project based on a book called "No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA and the U. S. Surveillance State" by former Guardian columnist Glenn Greenwald. There is a documentary titled "Citizenfour" by Laura Poitras as well. It won an Oscar this year.

In related news, Edward Snowden who fled the U.S. after telling the world about the NSA mass surveillance is considering to return to American soil. "Snowden is ready to return to the States, but on the condition that he is given a guarantee of a legal and impartial trial," said his Russian lawyer Kucherena.
