Following disses directed at superhero movies at recent Independent Spirit Awards and the Oscars, Gunn takes to Facebook to share his thoughts.

AceShowbiz - James Gunn has reacted to superhero movie disses at awards show. Following comments directed at them during the Independent Spirit Awards and the Oscars, the director of "Guardians of the Galaxy" shared his thoughts in a lengthy Facebook post sent out on Monday, February 23.

"Whatever the case, the truth is, popular fare in any medium has always been snubbed by the self-appointed elite," he wrote. "What bothers me slightly is that many people assume because you make big films that you put less love, care, and thought into them then people do who make independent films or who make what are considered more serious Hollywood films."

"If you think people who make superhero movies are dumb, come out and say we're dumb," he added. "But if you, as an independent filmmaker or a 'serious' filmmaker, think you put more love into your characters than the Russo Brothers do 'Captain America', or Joss Whedon does the Hulk, or I do a talking raccoon, you are simply mistaken."

It all started when "Nightcrawler" director Dan Gilroy mentioned "tsunami of superhero movies" at the Independent Spirit Awards when he took the stage to receive Best First Feature. "Independent film, the foundation and everybody here today, I think are holdouts against a tsunami of superhero movies that have swept over this industry. We have survived and we have thrived and I think that's true spirit," he said.

On Sunday, Jack Black mentioned superhero movies during his performance at the Oscars opening. "Opening with lots of zeroes, all we get are superheroes: Superman, Spider-man, Batman, Jediman, Sequelman, Prequelman - formulaic scripts!" he sang.

Gilroy's comment is especially a bit ironic because his wife Rene Russo took part in two "Thor" movies. Regarding the fact, Gunn said in the Facebook post, "Really, that seems like you've drowned horribly in that tsunami."
