AceShowbiz - CBS' "60 Minutes" correspondent Bob Simon was killed in a horrific car accident in New York City on Wednesday evening, February 11. Bob was a passenger in a livery cab that rear-ended a Mercedes-Benz sedan and then slammed into the median on 12th Avenue near West 30th Street at around 6:45 P.M., police said.

Police on the scene had to cut off the top of Bob's car to free him and the driver. The 73-year-old reporter was then rushed to St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver, meanwhile, was sent to Bellevue Hospital Center "with injuries that were not life-threatening," the Fire Department said.

The driver of the Mercedes wasn't injured and told New York Post that the livery's driver was driving erratically. "He swerved into me," the Mercedes driver said, "He hit me and he looked like he lost control of the car." Police are still investigating the case.

Bob is survived by his wife Francoise Simon and daughter Tanya, who is a producer for "60 Minutes".

"60 Minutes" Executive Producer Jeff Fager said in a statement, "It's a terrible loss for all of us at CBS News. It is such a tragedy made worse because we lost him in a car accident, a man who has escaped more difficult situations than almost any journalist in modern times."

"Bob was a reporter's reporter. He was driven by a natural curiosity that took him all over the world covering every kind of story imaginable. There is no one else like Bob Simon. All of us at CBS News and particularly at '60 Minutes' will miss him very much," Jeff added.

Fellow journalists paid tribute to Bob on Twitter. Andy Cohen wrote, "CBS News journalist Bob Simon was a legend in his field. How tragic. RIP." Pat O'Brien posted, "RIP @CBSNews Bob Simon. A giant in journalism and a very special man. There goes that mold." Katie Couric tweeted, "Heartbreaking news about Bob Simon of @60Minutes, a brilliant writer and reporter and someone I admired deeply."

Anderson Cooper posted, "#BobSimon was the best writer, in my opinion, working in broadcast news. I have admired him from the time I was a kid watching #CBSNews." Jeff Daniels tweeted, "Had the pleasure of speaking with Bob Simon before the #Newsroom Season 1 Premiere in NYC. R.I.P., Sir." Piers Morgan wrote, "Never met Bob Simon but wish I had. Loved his reports, loved his style. Truly, one of the greats of TV journalism."
