The director, who previously has said that 'Guardians' is separate from 'Avengers', talks about the hugely popular Marvel movies in a new interview.

AceShowbiz - Director James Gunn has once again denied possible affiliation between "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "The Avengers". In a new Podcast session with Jeff Goldsmith, Gunn was asked about the possibility of the two teams joining forces. In response, he explained "Guardians" position in the Marvel world, adding that it would not serve as a prequel to the next installment of "The Avengers", which is split into two parts "Avengers: Infinity War Part I" and "Avengers: Infinity War Part II".

"The last thing I said was something about how the Guardians, we really are mostly focused on creating the Guardians as their own separate universe, creating the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe. It isn't all about leading towards Avengers," he said.

"We're not subservient to The Avengers," he continued. "Whether or not at some point, some Guardians and some Avengers meet up and meet somewhere in the world, whether it's two years from now, three years from now, four years from now, fifteen years from now...I'm not going to say. But Guardians of the Galaxy does not exist as a prequel to Avengers 3 and 4. They have their own thing that they're involved in. They have their own mythos that they're involved in. They have their own stories that are equally important."

In the lengthy interview, Gunn additionally talked about whether he would direct a non-"Guardians" project. The director, who previously expressed his interest in working on a "Hit-Monkey" or "Thunderbolts" film, said, "DC is doing 'Suicide Squad', so I'm not so sure 'Thunderbolts' are applicable anymore, sadly. But [I'm] looking forward to 'Suicide Squad'." Similar to "Suicide Squad", "Thunderbolts" centers on villains who carry out heroic missions.

Also in the interview, Gunn shared what Marvel projects he'd be keen on joining. "For me, it's really is about... whatever I do for Marvel will probably be characters within Marvel Cosmic - which would be characters which are connected to this part of the universe. And if I told you too much who I'm interested in, then I would probably give out too many secrets," he teased.
