AMC has ordered one last season of the Western period drama which will be split into two parts.

AceShowbiz - "Hell on Wheels" will return for a fifth and final season. AMC has ordered 14 episodes for the last season which will be split into two parts. The show's farewell will begin in summer 2015, and the remaining seven episodes will air a year later.

"With Season 5 of 'Hell on Wheels', we are proud to bring our trans-continental journey to conclusion for the large, loyal audience that has traveled with Cullen Bohannon and his crew for so many years," AMC president Charlie Collier said in a statement released on Friday, November 7.

He added, "We look forward to appropriately honoring 'Hell on Wheels' in this final season. Enormous thanks to the terrific writers, cast and crew for all they have achieved and for all that lies ahead in the Wild West."

The "Hell on Wheels" cancellation is quite surprising since the Western period drama starring Anson Mount is a steady performer despite airing on the low-trafficked Saturday. The current fourth season has averaged 3.4 million total viewers in Live + 3 Day, up slightly from the third season average of 3.3 million viewers.

The last four episodes of "Hell on Wheels" season 4 will begin airing this Saturday, November 8.

AMC will also bid farewell to its hit drama "Mad Men" in 2015. The last season of the Jon Hamm-starrer is split into two parts as well, just like what the network did to "Breaking Bad".
