The Oscar-nominated actor will play a recurring role that overshadows Margo Martindale's role.

AceShowbiz - FX's "The Americans" will return for its third season in January 2015 with Frank Langella on board. The network announced on Thursday, October 16 that the Oscar nominee has been tapped to play a recurring role.

According to the press release, Langella will play Gabriel. He is Philip and Elizabeth's former KGB handler who comes out of retirement to take back responsibility for overseeing the two KGB operatives from their previous handler, Claudia.

"We've been huge fans of Frank's work for a long time, and it's been such a pleasure getting to know Frank himself in the beginning stages of working together on the character of Gabriel," said executive producers Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields in a statement. "We look forward to a great season together, and to what we're sure will be a phenomenal creative collaboration."

As for the fate of Margo Martindale's Claudia, Fields told EW, "We hope to have her back, but don't have it in a script yet. Claudia is secretive and unpredictable!" Production for the third season began this week.
