Despite the snowstorm in Northeast, 'Puss' successfully collects $34 million in its debut week, making a new record as the highest grossing film in Halloween weekend.

AceShowbiz - Animated movie rules North American box office in Halloween weekend. DreamWorks SKG's "Puss in Boots" secures number one spot on the chart with $34 million in its opening week. Despite the snowstorm in Northeast that affects the domestic grossing for new releases, the "Shrek" spin-off still manages to set a new Halloween weekend record, knocking down previous record holder "Saw III" which collected $33.6 million in 2006.

"Puss in Boots", which received an "A-" CinemaScore, appeals to 59|percent| female audience with 55|percent| of them over the age of 25. "The movie came in close to where we expected, given the holiday weekend," says Anne Globe, DWA chief marketing officer. "We think we're well positioned to take advantage of the next two weekends."

Last week's chart-topper, "Paranormal Activity 3", falls to the second place this weekend. Dropping 65|percent| from its debut weekend, the horror movie which only cost $5 for its production grosses $18.1 million for a total domestic cume of $81.3 million after ten days playing in theaters.

On number three, there is Justin Timberlake's futuristic action "In Time" which collects $12 million in its first week. 20th Century Fox distribution executive, Chris Aronson says, "Even though we were up against game seven of the World Series on Friday and a pretty severe storm on Saturday, we still came in right around pre-release expectation."

"Footloose" lands on the fourth place on its third weekend. Dropping 48|percent| from last week, the Julianne Hough-starring dance-themed remake movie adds $5.5 million for its $38.4 million total domestic cume after 17 days playing in theaters.

Rounding up the top five is the film adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's novel, "The Rum Diary", with only $5.1 million in its opening week. This is the lowest grossing in an opening week for a Johnny Depp-starring movie since 2007's "Sweeney Todd" with $9 million.

"Probably at the end of the day the whole Hunter thing attracts more of a cult audience," hopes Bob Berney, Film District president of theatrical distribution. "While he and Johnny were best friends and the movie is a tribute to Hunter, Hunter is still a little too extreme for the mainstream," he adds.
