what we have here is mostly a straight-up, mildly raunchy rom-com, where everyone learns lessons and gets a happy ending. But Shankman gives it all an agreeable bounce, and Henson zestfully dives into the comedy
this loose remake of Nancy Meyer's 2000 romcom-fantasy has admirable progressive aims, but even an inspired lead performance can't overcome its messy story
the movie offers no twists or surprises about its premise; I left the film not any more certain about what men want, but absolutely positive about what I want: better vehicles for Taraji P. Henson

nothing about this movie is subtle; "What Men Want" avoids some of the pitfalls of gender-flipping, given how loose its connection to "What Women Want" is. But that doesn't mean it's good
Good enough; Taraji P. Henson evinces a tremendously humorous, and human, capacity for grasping Ali's personal desperation and professional determination as she forges them into a semi-coherent strategy for success
