this movie fails on many levels. The childlike Chappie is apparently meant to be charming and funny, but he really isn't either
by Lou Lumenick [New York Post ]
there's material in Chappie for a worthwhile motion picture but too little is explored
by James Berardinelli [ReelViews ]
the lamentable result is far from riveting
by Peter Howell [Toronto Star ]
sprawling, bombastic, deafening, ugly and ultra-violent
by Graham Fuller [NY Daily News ]
low on budget (except for the CGI robots) and low on meaning, but full of high-velocity chases, helicopter pursuits, and weapons blasting around empty warehouses marred by graffiti and trash
by Steven Rea [Philadelphia Inquirer ]
Blomkamp's ideas feel depleted this time, dulled by repetition and other cinematic droids that stretch from HAL 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey to Ultron in the upcoming sequel to The Avengers
by Peter Travers [Rolling Stone ]
a movie of poorly motivated one-note characters, illogical action and trite musings on artificial intelligence
by Liam Lacey [Globe and Mail ]
a loud and unpleasant "RoboCop" rehash that gives us no one to root for and nothing to think about
by Rafer Guzman [Newsday ]
"Chappie" is sappy. There's a better rhyme but it's not a word used in family newspapers
by Colin Covert [Minneapolis Star Tribune ]
