Her first role was that of Howard Stern's daughter in the 1997 biographical comedy film "Private Parts". The following year, she portrayed the role of Molly in the romantic comedy flick "The Object of My Affection". This was followed by roles in "Cradle Will Rock" (1999), "Spanglish" (2004), "Struck by Lightning" (2012), "Scary Movie 5" (2013), and "Vampire Academy" (2014).

On TV, Hyland had guest starring roles on such series as, "Trinity", "Annie", "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit", "Touched by an Angel", and "Law & Order: Trial by Jury". She then landed a recurring role on the comedy-drama "Lipstick Jungle", after which she was recruited to act as regular on the hit sitcom "Modern Family". Portraying the role of oldest sibling Haley Dunphy, she was nominated for Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Comedy Supporting Actress in 2013. Besides, she and the rest of the show's cast won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series from 2011 through 2013.

During her time on "Modern Family", Hyland managed to score guest spots on "Childrens Hospital", "Punk'd", "Bonnie & Clyde" and "Hot in Cleveland". She, additionally, also provided the voice for Theresa Fowler on "Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja".

Hyland was born as Sarah Jane Hyland on November 24, 1990 in Manhattan, New York. Her younger brother Ian Hyland is also an actor. In 2009 she began dating actor Matt Prokop, whom she met while auditioning for "High School Musical 3: Senior Year". The couple lived together in 2011, but split up in 2014, during when she obtained a restraining order against him for abusing and threatening her during the course of their relationship.
