Melanie Martinez Biography

Melanie Martinez was born to Dominican and Puerto Rican parents in Astoria, Queens on April 28, 1995. Since she was a little kid, she had already started dreaming of becoming a singer while listening to songs by the likes of Britney Spears, Shakira, Christina Aguilera and so on. She started playing guitar at the age of fourteen, and began her career during her junior year of high school. At the time, she participated in the MSG Varsity Talent Show, though she was eliminated in the second round.

That didn't make her lose hope since Melanie later joined the audition for season three of "The Voice" by singing a rendition of Britney's "Toxic". She received three chair turns from Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and Cee-Lo, before she ultimately decided to be on Team Adam. Unfortunately, she was eliminated by audience vote in week five.

Although she failed to win the competition, Melanie surely succeeded in winning people's heart with her original music. She released her debut single, "Dollhouse", in February 2014. It was so well-received by people that it had been certified Platinum by the RIAA. The success of the song prompted her to sign a deal with Atlantic Records months later. Then, in May of the same year, she released her debut EP "Dollhouse", which included Gold-certified single "Carousel". The song was also featured in a preview for "American Horror Story: Freak Show".

In the following year, Melanie began promoting her first studio album, "Cry Baby", with the release of another Gold-certified single "Pity Party". The album's second single, "Soap", was released on July 10, 2015, with its music video garnering more than thirty million viewers. "Cry Baby" itself hit the stores on August 14 to moderate critical acclaim. It debuted at No. 6 on Billboard 200.

Following the release of "Cry Baby", Melanie immediately started working on her next album, "K-12", and finished it in 2016. As fans waited for the project to be dropped, Melanie treated them to her second EP entitled "Cry Baby's Extra Clutter", a physical vinyl release of the bonus tracks from "Cry Baby".

Fans needed to wait a little while before they could buy "K-12" as Melanie was producing a film telling the story of each song from the effort. Later on May 15, 2019, the first teaser trailer for the album was finally released, with the album cover being unveiled a day later on Instagram. "K-12" was unleashed on September 6, arriving at No. 3 on Billboard 200. A film accompanying the album's release was available in select theaters worldwide and was included in a version of the downloadable "K-12" album. She also posted the movie on YouTube.
