The Vampire Diaries is an American supernatural drama television series developed by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, based on the book series of the same name by L. J. Smith. The series premiered on The CW on September 10, 2009, and has aired eight seasons, with a ninth and final season set to premiere in 2017. The series follows the lives of Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), a 17-year-old girl who falls in love with two vampire brothers, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder).
