The Victoria Clark-starring musical leads the pack with five wins, including the coveted awards for Best Musical and best musical actress, followed by 'Leopoldstadt' and 'Some Like It Hot' with four apiece.

AceShowbiz - The show must go on and so did the 2023 Tony Awards amid the WGA strike. Hosted by Ariana DeBose for the second year in a row, the show took place at the United Palace in New York City on Sunday, June 11, with "Kimberly Akimbo" coming out victorious at the end of the night.

The musical based on David Lindsay-Abaire's book led the winner list with five nods, including the coveted Best Musical award. Its lead actress Victoria Clark won Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, while Bonnie Milligan won the best actress in supporting role award.

Lindsay-Abaire also took home the Best Book of a Musical and the Best Original Score for writing the lyrics for the musical, with the music by Jeanine Tesori.

Trailing behind "Kimberly Akimbo" with four nods was "Leopoldstadt". The Sir Tom Stoppard-created play was named Best Play and helped Brandon Uranowitz score an award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play.

The show's two others wins were in categories of Best Direction of a Play for Patrick Marber and Best Costume Design in a Play for Brigitte Reiffenstuel.

"Some Like It Hot" also bagged four gongs after landing the most nominations of the season. The musical by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman won the Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for J. Harrison Ghee. The show also nabbed Best Orchestrations for Charlie Rosen & Bryan Carter, Best Choreography for Casey Nicholaw and Best Costume Design in a Musical for Gregg Barnes.

Alex Newell, meanwhile, made history at the 76th annual Tony Awards after winning Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for their role in "Shucked". The actor is the first non-binary person to win an individual acting prize at the Tony Awards.

"I have wanted this my entire life. And I thank each and every one of you in this room," Newell said when accepting the prize. Thanking their mother was in the audience, they added, "Mommy, I love you. Thank you for believing in me. Thank you for loving me unconditionally. Thank you for teaching me what strength is."

Newell then thanked the cast and crew of "Shucked" while fighting back tears. "To my entire building and cast and crew of Shucked, you are my rock. I love you all. Thank you for seeing me, Broadway," they continued. "I should not be up here. As a queer, nonbinary, fat, black little baby from Massachusetts. And to anyone that thinks that they can't do it, I'm going to look you dead in your face and tell you that you can do anything you put your mind to."

Sean Hayes won Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play for his role in "Good Night, Oscar", with Jodie Comer taking home Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play for starring in "Prima Facie". "Parade" was picked as Best Revival of a Musical as it was also among the winners with multiple awards, alongside "Life of Pi" and "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street".

This year's Tony Awards went unscripted in solidarity with the WGA strike. Following the opening number in which Ariana DeBose danced to a jazzy medley of pre-existing Broadway hits, the actress addressed the non-traditional opening, "That was very special to me to be able to open tonight with dance forward and music forward and the number choreographed by Carlo Garcia. Very special. Thank you."

"All right. So, I'm sure some of you caught that I opened the number by opening the script blank pages," she continued. "Very good reason for that. Our siblings over at the WGA are currently on strike in pursuit of the fair deal. Now -- yes. And how many of us know what that is?"
