The 'Stranger Things' star makes the decision after the hashtag #TakeDownMillieBobbyBrown gains momentum and goes viral on the micro-blogging site.

AceShowbiz - "Stranger Things" actress Millie Bobby Brown has deleted her Twitter account after becoming the subject of a slew of homophobic memes.

The 14-year-old, who soared into the spotlight with her portrayal of Eleven in the hit Netflix series, is known to be vocal on social media, regularly posting about her career, Hollywood events and singer boyfriend Jacob Sartorius.

But the young star deleted her Twitter account on Wednesday, June 13 after the hashtag "#TakeDownMillieBobbyBrown" gained momentum, bringing with it a tidal wave of homophobic memes.

Online trolls began taking various selfies and media posted by Millie and photoshopping them with crude and offensive captions designed to make the actress, who is openly pro-LGBTQ, appear to be violently against homosexuality.

In one image of the star posing with a cup of coffee, a doctored caption had been added reading: "Just bought myself a piping hot coffee to throw on a f**got."

Another showed her sitting in a car, alongside the tagline: "Just got this car. It's pride month hoping to hit a few f**gots today."

A similar image of the IMG model was captioned: "just ran over a homo xoxo beep beep b**ch."

The socially-conscious star has long been a champion of LGBTQ rights, favouring public political statements to show her support.

In 2017, she attended the MTV Movie and TV Awards, where she accepted the best actor award for her role in Stranger Things, wearing two blue pins - one recognising the American Civil Liberties Union and the other to honour the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Together movement.

The actress' secondary Twitter account, @Milliestopshate, which was reportedly created to challenge cyber-bullying, is still active, along with her Facebook and Instagram pages.
