The 19-year-old singer reveals he avoids alcohol together in the U.S., where the legal drinking age is 21.

AceShowbiz - Canadian singer Shawn Mendes avoids alcohol altogether when he's out partying in the U.S. to prevent an underage drinking arrest.

The 19-year-old In My Blood hitmaker is too young to consume alcohol legally in America, where the legal drinking age is 21, so whenever he visits, the self-confessed boozer writes off cocktails entirely to avoid legal trouble.

"I drink a s**t-ton when I go home, and I just don't drink in America," he tells Rolling Stone magazine of his liquor-fuelled shenanigans in Canada, where it's legal to drink at 19. "I get it all out when I go home".

"I love rye and ginger," he adds of his drink of choice, "but I had to slow down because they don't feel good the next morning, so I just started drinking tequila, and it's better. I drink either Don Julio or Casamigos".

Shawn admits staying sober in the U.S. is frustrating because he is left out of the fun when his mates go out for a drink.

"I don't find it frustrating because I care about alcohol, I care about time with friends in bars. I'm being denied a social experience, not an alcoholic beverage," he explains. "I wish I was allowed to just go in the bar and drink a pop because then I would at least be there with everyone and I wouldn't have to be in my hotel, while everyone else is at the bar".

The singer balances his cocktail bar lifestyle in Canada by working out daily, but don't mistake Shawn for a health freak - he has a terrible diet.

"I eat tons of carbs," he shares. "I just work out a lot. I go to the gym every morning, and I'm obsessed with fitness and just staying active. But I'm not the best (person) to talk about when it comes to iet. If there's fries in front of me, Im definitely not gonna say no".
