The duke of Edinburgh is admitted to King Edward VII Hospital for a hip surgery after missing April 1 Easter service.

AceShowbiz - On Tuesday, April 3, Queen Elizabeth II's husband Prince Philip was admitted to hospital for a planned surgery on his hip. He was hospitalized at King Edward VII Hospital in Marylebone. It was said that the surgery would take place on Wednesday, April 4.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement, "His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London this afternoon, for planned surgery on his hip which will take place tomorrow. Further updates will be issued when appropriate."

Prince Philip did not attend the Easter service at Windsor Castle on Sunday, April 1. It was said that the absence was due to his hip problem. He also missed two other recent events. Those were the annual Royal Maundy Service at St. George's Chapel last Thursday, March 29 and a parade to mark Prince Andrew's appointment as Colonel of the Grenadier Guards on March 22.

The duke announced his retirement from most public duties in May 2017 after decades of supporting the Queen. His retirement included retiring from attending events for his own charities and organization. The retirement was later finalized on August 2, 2017.

In June 2017, the 96-year-old prince was admitted to the private King Edward VII Hospital as "a precautionary measure" following an infection derived from a pre-existing condition. At that time, he was supposed to attend the State opening of Parliament with Queen Elizabeth.

The pre-existing condition mentioned might be related to a moment at a November 2017 ceremony to commemorate those who died during Britain's war. At that time, he was seen having trouble standing and leaning against a wall. Besides, Prince Philip has suffered from heart disease and other ailments in recent years.

In December 2011, the prince suffered from chest pain and had to have a minor surgery to open a blocked artery. During Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee celebrations in June 2012, he was hospitalized for a bladder infection. In August the same year, Buckingham Palace announced that Prince Philip was readmitted to the hospital.

In 2013, the prince was admitted to the hospital for exploratory surgery after undergoing "abdominal investigations." The palace later said that he was progressing satisfactorily after the surgery, but had to remain in the hospital for approximately two weeks.
