DuVernay will work closely with Kario Salem, who has been tapped as the writer for the big-screen adaptation of Jack Kirby's comic creation.

AceShowbiz - Fresh off her journey with Disney's fantasy of dimensions of time and space, Ava DuVernay is going to be a part of DC Extended Universe. The Golden Globe and Academy Award-nominated filmmaker is closing a deal to direct a big-screen adaptation of DC Comics' "The New Gods" for Warner Bros.

"The New Gods" is the creation of Jack Kirby and was first released in 1971. The studio has tapped Kario Salem ("Chasing Mavericks") as the writer. He will create the narrative and work closely with DuVernay.

DuVernay has not directly commented on her new gig, but she has posted on Twitter a photo of Kirby and shared his inspirational quote, "Our dreams make us large." She also thanked him, writing, "Thank you, #JackKirby."

The New Gods are natives of the twin planets of New Genesis and Apokolips. New Genesis is an idyllic planet ruled by the Highfather, while Apokolips is a dystopia filled with machinery and fire pits ruled by the tyrant Darkseid. "Justice League" villain Steppenwolf, played by Ciaran Hinds, is one of the New Gods and the uncle of Darkseid.

Interestingly, DuVernay once revealed her favorite superhero character is Big Barda, who is one of the New Gods. She previously was offered to direct Marvel's "Black Panther", but turned it down.

This marks the second Warner Bros.-DC superhero project to be directed by a female director, after Patty Jenkins' successful "Wonder Woman" starring Gal Gadot. Jenkins and Gadot will both return for the sequel, which is set to arrive on November 1, 2019.

Jenkins has shown her support for DuVernay by praising her latest work, "A Wrinkle in Time". The former tweeted, "My son just said 'I wish I had a time machine so that I could go back and see @WrinkleInTime again for the first time!' That's how much we enjoyed the beauty of the message and feeling like he was being included in something that didn't condescend. Thank you for that, @Ava."

DuVernay replied the tweet, "Designed #WRINKLEINTIME especially for our young ones, Patty. So his response thrills me. Thanks for taking your sweet boy. Look forward to seeing you around the block soon, lady. xo."
