Jon Bernthal Joins Damien Chazelle's Neil Armstrong Biopic

The 'Punisher' star is joining Ryan Gosling in the biopic called 'First Man' to be helmed by the 'La La Land' helmer.

AceShowbiz - Jon Bernthal has been added the the growing cast of Universal's Neil Armstrong biopic "First Man". The Tracking Board has reported that "The Punisher" star is in negotiations to play Dave Scott, who walked on the moon in July 1971 as part of Apollo 15, making him one of only a dozen men to have set foot on its surface.

Bernthal is joining Ryan Gosling in the biopic, which will reunite the latter with his "La La Land" director Damien Chazelle. The cast also includes Kyle Chandler, Corey Stoll and Jason Clarke. Filming is expected to begin this November in Atlanta. The film is set for an October 12, 2018 release in U.S. theaters.

"First Man" is based on James Hansen's biography "First Man: A Life Of Neil A. Armstrong", the riveting story of NASA's mission to land a man on the moon which focuses on Neil Armstrong and the years 1961-1969. Described as "a visceral, first-person account," the movie aims to explore the sacrifices and the cost-on Armstrong and on the nation-of one of the most dangerous missions in history. Armstrong died in 2012 at age 82.

The biopic is written by Academy Award winner Josh Singer ("Spotlight"). It will be produced by Wyck Godfrey & Marty Bowen ("The Twilight Saga", "The Fault in Our Stars") through their Temple Hil Entertainment banner, alongside Chazelle and Gosling. Isaac Klausner will executive produce, with DreamWorks Pictures co-financing the film.

Bernthal has just wrapped filming on the Steve McQueen-directed crime thriller "Widows", in which he stars along with the likes of Liam Neeson, Colin Farrell, Michelle Rodriguez, Viola Davis and Elizabeth Debicki. Written by Gillian Flynn, the thriller is due out November 16 next year.

He is also known for his work on films like "The Wolf of Wall Street", "Sicario" and "Baby Driver" as well as playing Shane on "The Walking Dead" and Frank Castle/Punisher on "Daredevil". He will reprise his role as the Punisher on his upcoming solo series which will follow Frank Castle being haunted and hunted after the murder of his family and becoming a vigilante known in the criminal underworld as "the Punisher", who aims to fight crime by any means necessary.
