AceShowbiz - The majority of people in Scotland have chosen to stay with the U.K. following a historical referendum which took place on Thursday, September 18. After the result came out, many public figures have responded to the news. J.K. Rowling, who said "No" to independence, is among stars who first shared their reactions on social media.

"Been up all night watching Scotland make history. A huge turnout, a peaceful democratic process: we should be proud," the "Harry Potter" author said. She then retweeted replies from fans around the world who followed the news. "I am very impressed by the way the Scotland handled the control on things. Peace, peace, and peace," read one comment.

Earlier this year, the famed author also gave financial support to Better Together campaign. She consequently received hateful messages online from others who do not share the same opinion. "My head says no and my heart shouts it - but whatever happens, I hope we're all friends by Saturday," she tweeted back on Wednesday.

"The people of Scotland have spoken and it is a clear result. They've kept our country of four nations together and like millions of other people, I am delighted," Prime Minister David Cameron said following the result. "As I said during the campaign, it would have broken my heart to see our United Kingdom come to an end and I know that this sentiment was shared not just by people across our country but also around the world."

"Now the debate has been settled for a generation, or as [Scottish First Minister] Alex Salmond has said, perhaps for a lifetime. So there can be no disputes, no reruns - we have heard the settled will of the Scottish people," he continued.

Former Spice Girls member Geri Halliwell additionally said, "Thank you Scotland - together we are Great Britain." Actor Brian Cox, who said "Yes" to independence, told Sky News, "It's disappointing but I'm caught between two emotions because I'm incredibly proud.
