Showtime will not renew the dark comedy series starring Edie Falco beyond the upcoming seventh season.

AceShowbiz - Edie Falco will hang up her scrub soon. Showtime announced on Wednesday, September 10 that "Nurse Jackie" would have its seventh season and no more. "#NurseJackie is working one last shift!" the network tweeted. "Join us in celebrating and bidding farewell to the 7th and FINAL season in 2015."

"Edie is one of our finest actresses," Showtime President David Nevins said in a statement. "We are so honored to have had her on the network. She creates indelible characters and Nurse Jackie Peyton is no exception"

The final season will go into production this week and premiere next year. "I know this final season will bring her story to a close that will satisfy the ever-growing number of loyal viewers who have been entranced and, at times, appalled by Jackie through the years," Nevins continued. "I want to thank Edie, the incredible cast of Nurse Jackie and Clyde Phillips and Richie Jackson who have led the show to the success that it is today."

Debuted in 2009, the series quickly became one of Showtime's signature shows and took home two Emmys for Falco and supporting cast Merritt Wever. It averaged 3.4 million weekly viewers across all platforms in its sixth season.
