In this poignant and quietly devastating drama from director Roger Michell, Peter O'Toole delivers a career-defining performance as Maurice, an aging, once-celebrated actor whose life has settled into a comfortable but unremarkable routine with his old friends, played by Richard Griffiths and Leslie Phillips. His world is upended when he agrees to look after Jessie, the brash, foul-mouthed, and unexpectedly captivating 19-year-old niece of his friend Ian, portrayed with raw energy by Jodie Whittaker. Initially resistant to her abrasive attitude, Maurice finds himself drawn to Jessie's unguarded vitality, a stark contrast to the polite, fading world he inhabits. Their unlikely, complex relationship becomes a deeply affecting exploration of desire, regret, and the desperate ache for connection in the twilight of life. As Maurice navigates this late-in-life obsession, he must confront the limitations of his aging body and the ghosts of his past, while Jessie, in turn, begins to see beyond his frail exterior. Complicating matters is the presence of Maurice's formidable ex-wife, played with grace and steel by Vanessa Redgrave, who observes his transformation with a mixture of concern and wry understanding. Venus is a tender, unflinching, and often humorous look at youth and age, beauty and decay, and the enduring, complicated nature of love.
