The Northern Irish athlete filed for divorce from his wife of seven years Erica on Monday, May 13, citing the marriage as 'irretrievably broken.'

AceShowbiz - Rory McIlroy has made a public appearance for the first time after news about his split from Erica Stoll made media headlines. At the press conference before the 2024 PGA Championship, the professional golfer was seen without his wedding ring.

The 35-year-old also refused to discuss his divorce with reporters. At the Wednesday, May 15 press conference, a moderator declared, "I believe you all saw the statement yesterday from Rory's communication team specifically that he will not be making any additional comments on his private life, so thank you all for respecting his wishes."

Thus, while at the podium at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Rory talked about the second major of the season, which gets underway Thursday. He also addressed his Wells Fargo Championship win last week.

Rory filed for divorce from his wife Erica on Monday after seven years of marriage. According to court documents obtained by the New York Post, he cited the marriage as "irretrievably broken."

Rory and Erica had a prenup. The Northern Irishman is reportedly seeking joint custody of their daughter.

On Tuesday, a spokeswoman for Rory issued a statement that read, " Rory McIlroy's communications team confirmed today that a divorce has been filed." The message added, "They stressed Rory's desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible. He will not be making any further comment."

Just one day before the filing, Rory shared that he performs best on the golf course when he is preoccupied. "Getting inside the ropes for that four or five hours or whatever it is a day, it's a nice escape from everything else that’s going on in the world of golf," he stated during a Sunday press conference when asked about the PGA Tour Board.

"I don't mind it. I've always been able to compartmentalize pretty well," the athlete continued. "I seem to, for whatever reason, play very good golf whenever I have a lot of stuff going on."
